West Virginia Leadership Academy

The West Virginia Leadership Academy is a nationally recognized training program to enable people to take more responsibility in community planning and improvement.

The Leadership Academy began in Idaho as a demonstration project, "Consumer Involvement in Community Advocacy Organizations." It was developed from materials originally conceived as training for older persons to obtain advocacy skills. In Idaho, the original goal was to provide consumers of mental health services and family members of consumers with skills needed to assume a position of strong leadership in advocating for improvements in mental health services and supports. The Academy also provides a graduate support system, offers opportunities to apply skills in home communities, and collects data related to impact graduates have had.

West Virginia adopted the Leadership Academy for Consumers and Families through the efforts of the Director of the Office of Behavioral Health Services, who was aware of the program from his work in Idaho. Key leaders within the Office of Behavioral Health Services, the West Virginia Mental Health Consumers Association, and the West Virginia Alliance for the Mentally Ill obtained a Federal grant to modify the curriculum and initiate the program in West Virginia. Leadership Academy materials have been utilized in most states and in several foreign countries. The curriculum has been translated into several languages.

The West Virginia Leadership Academy for Consumers and Families is led by J.K. McAtee, coordinator, and sponsored by the West Virginia Behavioral Health Planning Council. For more information, contact:
